I Dege
From Empire to Europe
2 min readJul 20, 2016

During this semester, we dealt with the history and in particular with the decline of the British Empire. In order to approach this topic, different methods were used: foreshadowing, a chronological approach and drawing a link to the current situation.

We started with a foreshadowing. In other words, we dealt with the question, why the Empire failed right at the beginning. In my opinion, this was a good idea, because the theories on the end of the Empire helped us to gain an overview.

In the following we focused on the chronological events that determined the decline of the Empire. Since we already knew about the theories on the end of the Empire, we could link this knowledge and discuss in how far certain events might support which theory.

What I, however, liked most about the course was that it was not only a history class but that we could link the newly gained knowledge in order to discuss the current British affairs and to look at them from another, historical perspective. The Bexit is a very moving topic and because of this emotional relevance the drawn link between nowadays and the past made the historical development of the Empire more accessible to me.

I am happy to have attended this class. The Empire is part of what I would define common knowledge and it was enriching to have summed up the most important steps of its decline and to have heard the thoughts of other class members on the topic. It encouraged me to buy a book which was presented in the first days of our class. I am really keen on reading it!
