What would a possible Brexit mean for us in Germany?

At the moment, one of the most discussed topics in both German and British news media is the upcoming referendum in the United Kingdom on 23rd June. As the result is still quite unclear and polls are showing varying results, I started to ask myself the following question: What would a possible Brexit mean for us in Germany? — For the “normal” citizen!

Would it mean that we need to apply for a visa before travelling to Britain? Would there be stricter border controls at the airport? Or would Scottish whiskey get more expensive than it already is?

Probably not! The German passport is the strongest one in the world, at the moment, which means that we can travel to more countries without any visa restrictions than anyone else from another country. It is even likely that the entry requirements would remain almost the same and we would only need our identity card to cross the British border. The reason for that is that the United Kingdom might have a great interest in establishing a new treaty that secures the economic relationships with its European partners. Iceland for example is not part of the European Union, but has almost the same entry requirements due to the EFTA agreement. Furthermore, the UK is not a member of the Schengen area right now. There are already quite strict border controls. So that should definitely be nothing to worry about if the Brexit occurs.

The same would apply to Scottish whiskey. Besides these things It is also likely that the price of the British pound would drop significantly in case of the Brexit. As a result, Scottish whiskey would even get cheaper for us!
