Healing is hard. Once you start to unpack your emotional baggage, you feel even worse: You thought you had one specific problem to fix but it turns out there’s so much stuff and you still have no tools to deal with it. So, you get overwhelmed and start to cry.

Then you learn to respond to your triggers calmly but it’s hard to do it outside your room. You get frustrated because you failed (again), and additional negative thoughts and feelings swamp you, so you cry some more.

The tools to help you heal are pretty simple but boring. In other words, they take a lot of time and repetition to work:

  • When you’re overwhelmed, journal. You’ll feel relieved to get it all out and later you’ll see negative patterns in thinking. When you have it written down, you can see more objectively how distorted it is and come up with healthier thoughts.
  • When you’re tense, breathe because anxiety starts in your body. This way you stop its automatic response of panic and create space for a healthy reaction. Continue to do mindful breathing every day when you’re OK so that it works when you’re not.
  • When you’re about to go crazy, remember something triggered your old unhealthy belief again. It’s the…
