Quantum Computing, Clock-Domain Crossing, and Counterfeit Chips: The Synopsys November Blog Roundup

By: Editorial Team

We’re looking back on some of our top blogs for the month of November. In an era where high speed and low power are prevailing themes, innovation remains the name of the game.

From understanding your silicon to supporting women in tech, our thought leaders shared their diverse perspectives on a wide range of trends that are pushing the boundaries in the semiconductor industry. Dive deeper for valuable insights on how they will play a role in shaping EDA-related innovations going forward

1. Q&A with Latha Venkatachari on Growing Women-in-Tech Leaders

We sat down with VP of Applications Engineering Latha Venkatachari to discuss gender diversity in tech and the ways in which women can overcome the unique career challenges they face. To create a channel for women to speak out about the obstacles they’ve encountered, Latha created the Women in Networking (WIN) forum in 2016 at Synopsys, with a goal of fostering women’s leadership in the tech space. Today, the Women Impact Network is one of Synopsys’ top Employee Resource Groups that promotes an inclusive and diverse workplace, and Latha has been honored with the YWCA Tribute to Women award, a Synopsys Diversity & Inclusion Champion award, and, most recently, the prestigious Marie R. Pistilli Women in Engineering Achievement Award, presented at this year’s Design Automation Conference.

2. Integration Challenges for Multi-Billion-Gate ASICs: Part 1 — Clock Domain Crossing

Rimpy Chugh, senior product marketing manager in the Silicon Realization Group, explores the well-documented digital design issue, clock domain crossing (CDC). Asynchronous clock domains can result in meta-stability in ASIC systems, a complex problem that can ultimately lead to bugs that simply cannot be worked around in the final stages of silicon. This blog dives into the ways in which designers can actively avoid an expensive and challenging fix and provides an overview of the VC SpyGlass™ CDC solution integrated into the Synopsys Verification Continuum® platform.

3. Calculating the Unimaginable: Quantum Computing and Its Impact on Chip Design

There is little doubt that quantum computing is emerging as a new figurehead of innovation and progress in the EDA industry. Quantum computing opens the door for larger scale designs, higher quality, and broader adoption of superconducting properties. Kenneth Larsen, product marketing director in the Silicon Realization Group, discusses the ways in which chipmakers can leverage quantum computing in their designs and shares some recent emerging trends in the space that will lead to increased research and discovery.

4. Counterfeit Chips 101: Protect Your Next Design

As the global chip shortage continues to unfold, production has slowed and the semiconductor industry has dealt with an influx of counterfeit chips. Synopsys Scientist Mike Borza delves into why chip fraud has become so widespread and the time-consuming and logistical challenges the market faces when attempting to combat the problem. Companies need to assess the effectiveness of their anti-counterfeiting strategies over the lifetime of their products and embed security features early in the design phase.

5. Understand Your Silicon Inside and Out — Even When It’s in the Field

Stephen Pateras, senior director of marketing & business development, provides insight on the importance of being able to monitor and course correct all stages of the silicon lifecycle. Synopsys’ SiliconMAX platform recently gained additional capabilities through the company’s acquisition of Concertio, whose bread and butter is real-time, artificial intelligence-based optimization technology. With the integration of Concertio’s reinforcement learning features, users of the SiliconMAX platform will be able to better predict how the system will perform and automatically reconfigure and optimize the system.
