The Trulaske College of Business is everywhere — and the world is taking notice. Here is how our students, faculty, staff and alumni are strengthening Mizzou and making headlines in the new year.

Harry M. Cornell, Jr. honored as 2019 AACSB Influential Leader

Trulaske College of Business alumnus Harry M. Cornell, Jr. is one of 33 business school graduates being honored by AACSB International as the 2019 class of Influential Leaders. The annual challenge recognizes notable alumni from AACSB-accredited schools whose inspiring work creates lasting impact in their communities, industries and around the world. Harry currently serves as Chairman Emeritus of Leggett & Platt, Inc. He was a founding member of the Trulaske Strategic Development Board and remains an active member. Mr. Cornell, in conjunction with Leggett & Platt, made a substantial gift to the college during its Excellence Through Change campaign. In 2006, he made an additional gift to the college, part of which funds enhancements to Cornell Hall and established the Cornell Leadership Program. Read more here.

Mizzou Alumni Association honors five from Trulaske among 2019 Mizzou 18, Mizzou ’39 recipients

In the spirit of service first modeled by the University’s founding families in 1839, the Mizzou Alumni Association Student Board presents the Mizzou 18 and Mizzou ’39 awards. The Mizzou 18 honors graduate and professional students in their last year of degree eligibility. They are chosen for their world-class research, collaboration with faculty and staff, and their demonstrated leadership with undergraduate students. The Mizzou ’39 is awarded to undergraduate seniors each year who are chosen for their academic achievement, leadership and service to Mizzou and the community.

Five students from the Trulaske College of Business were honored at the Mizzou Alumni Association’s annual Mizzou 18 and Mizzou ‘39 awards. Undergraduates Jennifer Broyles, Anna Kouba, Armaan Painter and Mackenzie Stout received Mizzou ’39 honors, while Crosby MBA candidate Orvil Savery received Mizzou 18 honors. Trulaske Professor Awarded 2019 Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence

University of Missouri Chancellor Alexander Cartwright and Steve Sowers, Commerce Bank President & CEO of the Central & Eastern Missouri Region, awarded one of the 2019 William T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence to Donald Meyer, assistant teaching professor of marketing in the Trulaske College of Business.

Cartwright, Sowers and the Trulaske College of Business Dean Vinzé along with a group of professors, administrators and staff surprised Meyer by honoring him with the fellowship, which includes a $10,000 check. Kemper Fellowships are awarded to five outstanding teachers at the University of Missouri each year.

This year is the 29th anniversary of the William T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence, which were established in 1991 with a $500,000 gift. Kemper, a 1926 MU graduate, was a well-known civic leader in Kansas City until his death in 1989. His 52-year career in banking included top positions at banks in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma.

School of Accountancy receives IMA endorsement

The Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) has announced that it has selected the School of Accountancy for the IMA’s Higher Education Endorsement Program. The endorsement program is designed to recognize curriculum of the highest quality and increase opportunities offered to our students. Dr. Raef Lawson, IMA vice president was on campus to present Dean Vinzé and Accountancy Director Vairam Arunachalam with a recognition plaque.

Sara Cochran named to CBT 20 Under 40

Congratulations to Sara Cochran, Ph.D. for being honored as one of the Columbia Business Times 20 Under 40. Recipients are professionals under the age of 40 who excel both in their field and as community citizens. Sara teaches entrepreneurship courses at the Trulaske College of Business and is currently serving as Interim Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Can changing CEOs lead to companies’ performance boost?

Finance professor Kuntara Pukthuanthong, along with researchers from Concordia University, looked at the effects of CEO turnover on companies in a recently published paper that was featured in Fortune. Read more of Pukthuanthong’s research here.

How investing ability changes with age

Finance department chair John Howe, along with Mizzou alumnus Michael Finke (PhD ’11) and Sandra Huston, was recently cited in Forbes for his research entitled “Old Age and the Decline in Financial Literacy.” The study, which found a mix of overconfidence and reduced abilities, examined the poor credit and investment choices made by older subjects. The Blockchain Game

Scott Christianson, an assistant teaching professor of management, has developed an exercise called The Blockchain Game for teaching blockchain technology. The game uses hand-on exercises in order to teach anyone from high-school students to adults about blockchain technology without overwhelming them with technical details. This Blockchain Game was featured in Columbia Business Times and a full article can be read here. The Blockchain Game is available in English and German translations, and Christianson has made all of the exercise materials available here for free under a Creative Commons License.
