The Comedy and Controversy of Dave Chappelle
It’s no secret that Dave Chappelle’s entire body of work consists of what is deemed “politically incorrect”. From his most shocking television sketches to his most notorious stand-up specials, everything the comedian releases is met with controversy and backlash. Time and time again, mainstream media platforms have tried to paint Dave in a highly unfavorable light simply because of the sensitive — and culturally suppressed — material he incorporates into his comedy.
For example, Dave’s most recent Netflix comedy special, ‘Sticks and Stones’, garnered an official critic’s rating of 0% on popular review site, “Rotten Tomatoes”, upon its initial 2019 release…and yet the site’s audience rating was unanimously positive, earning a rating just shy of 100% (remaining around 99% today, a rating any frequent visitor of the site will tell you is not easy to maintain). While the critics score has since risen to around 35%, it’s incredibly odd that among some of the most respected critics in the business, literally none of them found the special to be worth watching upon first view. It goes without saying that this is hard to believe.
