Practical Prototyping for Qualitative Research

Joel will review some career examples from Netflix and Google and how he quickly created prototypes for research, with no code. He will walk through simple, practical, and effective ways to create simple prototypes in order to get conduct qualitative and usability research.

- Learn how to take an existing design, create an animated prototype, and script a qualitative study script/plan
- Intro overview of proper qualitative study methods and practices
- Learn what design tools are best used for a variety of prototypes

About Joel

Joel Beukelman is a Southern California native working as a Senior Interaction Designer on Chrome at Google. Over the past 7 years, he has had the opportunity to contribute to variety of products/apps from early-stage startups to global applications. Prior to Google (Chrome & Android), Joel helped start Design Inc. as the Head of Design, worked on mobile apps and the launch of Netflix Originals, as well as a number of other startups. Outside of his love for design and tech, Joel spends his free time enjoying being a family man, getting tattoos, listening all things punk/metal, and documenting life/work on YouTube.

Design Critiques Done Right

Scaling Fidelity

We’ll cover the design fidelity gamut, from word lists to animated prototypes, and demonstrate why designing and communicating at a strictly relevant level of detail is becoming a mandatory skill for high performance product teams.

Matt Bryan works for Workfront as a UX Manager, where he facilitates culture that moves designers out of the boxes of conventional thinking and approval seeking. He cares deeply about the team and works along side his direct reports to provide Workfront customers with work measurement solutions that are at once original and obvious. Before Workfront, Matt helped Adobe redefine digital analytics through design leadership that resulted in a net new flagship product called Analysis Workspace.
