Front Steps Project

Rocio Guenther works on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic as the Head of Constituent Services for San Antonio Mayor, Ron Nirenberg. This means she provides critical services to the community, and corresponds via written letters, email, and phone calls to ensure everyone feels heard.

“In a matter of days questions from the community shifted from, ‘can you fix this pothole on my street’ to ‘I’m on the brink of homelessness’ or ‘I’m in a precarious situation at home and I need to get out,’” explained Guenther.

While state government overrules local government, Chio explains the nuanced approach San Antonio’s local government has taken during the COVID-19 pandemic to restore dignity and security to their citizens.

The purpose of The Front Steps Project is to document the impact the COVID-19 pandemic is having on individuals in my community. No one is exempt from being affected in some way by the fall out from this virus. This is history. These are our stories.

The Front Steps Project was started by Massachusetts-based photographer, Cara Soulia.
