Although punk music by women is very much appreciated, women’s contribution in punk bands has been always highly unrecognized in the media. However, things are changing.

Five women making their breakthrough

Here are 5 women who are now making their breakthrough and using their voice to break stereotypes. While some of them lead their own bands, others speak up for noble causes and are active in charity work. These women-fronted bands are carving a name for themselves in the music industry while redefining the meaning of punk music. They are also gathering many fans around the globe. Have a look at their valuable advice on how to become more empowered as a woman.

Dirty Dishes — Jenny Tuite

Jenny Tuite is one of those frontwomen and guitarists that you can’t classify in any category, it won’t do justice to her talent! ‘Dirty Dishes’ is best listened to when you’re making out. A blend of brash and sharp guitar sounds while she sings with full melodic power, Tuite’s songs will rip your heart in half.

Her advice: “Women shouldn’t be faulted for feeling shy or uncomfortable playing at first. Learning an instrument is hard enough, and women have the added pressure of people critiquing them prematurely. Learn, however, to be comfortable.”

The Coathangers

The motto of this punk band is diversity. No two songs of theirs are of the similar genre. Although they are always experimenting with hip-hop, rock, dance music, rock and roll, metal, post-punk, etc., they still ensure that their albums are full of catchy and “in-your-face-lyrics” that will make you shrill screams. “Don’t Touch My Shit” is one of their blockbusters that helps in understanding why they are so successful.

Their advice: “The way to change the status quo is to change it, not just discuss it. Actions speak volume, so… START A BAND!”

Glittoris

Loud, fast, feminist and aggressive — this is what Glittoris’ punk band is all about! If you’re feeling angry at the patriarchy and want to scream out loud, then “Be the Change” is the song that should be up your playlist right now. This band’s lyrics are all about empowering women and refusing to abide by what society imposes on them.

Their advice: “I want women to be at peace with their truth in whatever way they see fit. Aggressive or not.”

Art School Jocks

This all-girl group sources its inspiration from the collective influences of the 70’s rock girl groups, pop, art rock and goth. They are actively part of The Peach Coven, a charitable organization that distributes menstrual hygiene products to the homeless throughout Atlanta.

Their advice: Encourage and support other women in the music industry.

Screaming Females

This female-fronted punk band has been creating enjoyable and exciting music, with fierce lyrics and body thrashing songs. “Rose Moutain” and “Empty Head” are two examples of it.

Their advice: “No two of us are exactly the same… I’m by no means shy when it comes to getting on stage and singing about being a queer lady. People can take from it what they will”.
