The MUTEK Electronic Music and Digital Arts Festival kicks off its 14th edition on 22nd of November in Mexico with a broad and diverse program. Due to the recent earthquake in the country, the festival had to be reconfigured.

An international festival of digital creativity

MUTEK is an international platform for the dissemination and development of digital creativity in sound, music and audiovisual arts. MUTEK.MX was scheduled to take place in October in the Mexican capital. But with the magnitude 7.1 earthquake that occurred on September 19th in the center of the country, the festival is reviewing its priorities. Mobilized to help the city and its people, it must also ensure that its 14th edition will be able to welcome the public safely, and shifted its dates to the 22–26 of November. “We are body and soul with all those who have been affected”, announced the teams of the Mexican version of the MUTEK festival, MUTEK.MX.

A wind of renewal stimulates creation

With the goal of continually rethinking and remodelling the festival in order to offer its audience increasingly diverse and revealing experiences, the programmers aim to create a distinct trajectory that opens up the most adventurous inclinations of electronic music and digital creativity. MUTEK Mexico is moving into new spaces this year and is embarking on another unique journey to bring its community together.

Artificial intelligence is a key feature

Artificial intelligence is one of the main attractions of this edition. A strong dish for geeks and lovers of robotics and the most advanced technology. It may sound out of context, especially when there are few who have conceived the idea of mixing music and artificial intelligence. For the education that the musicians receive, the coming out of artificial intelligence is a world that seems complicated, but fortunately the barrier that limited both mathematicians, artists, and engineers over the years has been erased, so the possibilities they have become more than infinite, to the extent that AI has merged with contemporary art.

Not everything is music and sound art

There will also be high impact visual exhibitions, virtual reality activities, and facilities. But, this festival has been distinguished for its stellar presentations and this year there will be a marathon of sound and visual artists that span over different generations: from baby boomers like Alva Noto, to Millennials like Issac Soto they will all have their space. Each generation will have the opportunity to show the vision and representation in which they understand technology.

A festival promoting multiculturality

The multiculturality of the festival allows us to appreciate that even within the homogeneity of machines and numbers, algorithms are a consequence of the context of the creator. For example, it was not the same house music that was born in Chicago to the house sound that emerged in England, to the extent of having its own genre called acid house. In addition, the cultural fusion of space has allowed importing technology from different countries to Mexico and can even be applied in other areas and not only for what they were designed. Despite the setback by the earthquake, fortunately, all artists have confirmed their participation after the date change.
