Now internationally recognized, Harley Valentine has become known for his metal-plate biomorphic sculptures but mostly for his first major public art installation, The Dream Ballet, at the Sony Center for performing Arts. Valentine often invites the role of performance, film and photography in the creation and presentation of his works. What is your definition of the word “art”?

Materialization of self expression or a reaction in place and time

I was born an artist, the curse is real…

What are the pros and cons of going into your practice in an entrepreneurial way?

Art is business and an artist must manage their self expression while juggling their cheques and balances.

What inspires you daily?

The human drive to create and innovate.

What is your greatest challenge?

Gravity, utility and etiquette.

How do you keep overcoming that challenge?

Always looking for new ways to play the game…

What is the most exciting part of your creative process?

The creative process is a mystery to me, I see creating works of art like a trade building a home.

What recently came true into your life that you would never have thought possible?

Understanding of one self, I was a complete mystery before….

Environmentalism, what a better subject and medium to work in support of.
