Toronto-based band, DOOMSQUAD, is set to play the Grickle Grass Festival in London, Ontario. This local shamanic beat band, made up of three siblings, rocked the night at the Winter Spectacular Festival in December 2016. They are now set to return to London to play again in December 2017 for the crowd they drove wild at the legendary Vibrafusion Lab.

Old live performances had a subversive twist

Their live performances have been an awesome collection of musical styles, from world music to electronic experimentation, and cosmic sounds that are captivatingly danceable. In their early days, they played Christian folk songs, with a demonic, pagan twist and subversion, which they now refer to as their “dark side”. However, their sound has changed dramatically and gone from dark to ecstatic in one easy move.

Kalaboogie was their most successful release yet

The main element in their new sound is the way the instruments make the music flow as if in nature. Following on from the success of their “Kalaboogie” release, they have tried experimenting with different sounds and styles, indigenous rhythms, and natural-sounding melodies. The songs are vocally layered within such tracks as “Ovoo”, filled with hysterical screams in “It’s the Nail that Counts not the Rope”, and inserted muffled clips of conversations into the track “Sun. March 1st 2015: Snow falls on Manzano”.

Five members and two families form one band

The band are made up of two sets of siblings; Trevor, Jaclyn, and Allie Blumas, and Josh and Jesse Hasko. They are signed with Canadian record label, Hand Drawn Dracula, and have released six albums, including one from Artificial Records and one with the heretical Objects Cooperative. Originally formed in 2010, they have spent the last seven years working the local and international festival scenes, as well as producing some of Canada’s most ethereal and surrealistic music.

Ambient recordings feature on their latest track

The siblings have been working together as a band for several years, and majority of their music is the result of studying different meditative sounds. Their latest offering — Spandrels Sessions Vol. 1: Unconscious Transmissions from the Manzano Mountains — is a project that includes ambient recordings of what is they say is a “meditative mix”.The band have described the album as “the consciousness of total time”.

A motley mix of musical maestros at Grickle Grass

The session at the Grickle Grass is putting the band alongside such stunning and experimental acts as: Hooded Fang, from Toronto; Secret Sign, also from Toronto; Lonely Parade, from Peterborough; and Zachary Grey, from London, Ontario. The event takes place at the London Children’s Museum, and begins at 10am. By the late afternoon, the show will change over to become a fully licensed venue, for adults only, and will run on late into the night. The complete lineup for the event is a huge mix of creative personalities, each with their own unique story to tell, and messages to send out via the medium of their artistic talents.
