Needs of Orlando’s Ecosystem

In the City of Orlando there are many opportunities to develop a business idea along with resources to help scale. The bustling city is heavily concentrated in innovation and creation. Still, there are communities that are not aware of these resources which causes a lag in implementing a “none-left-behind” transformation that is lasting. This, as well as low-income wages and affordable housing are a few needs within the community’s ecosystem.

Even with community engagement driven organizations like StarterStudio and other resources, some areas in Orlando are not fully aware of the connections and opportunities to take advantage. Informal business owners, inventors, and creators who have the ability to establish a steady source of income are not conscious of the potential within their own community.

Along with this, low-income wages limits any financial action from being taking simply because household expenses and necessities are a priority. Making ends meet on Florida’s minimum wage of $8.46 is a severe cost burden. Bills are paid, there is food to eat, and transportation is secured for work, all adding up with probably very little to spare.

Another need for Orlando is affordable housing. Although there are some affordable options, most of these include college housing and aren’t ideal for families and those looking to settle in. Spending majority of your income on housing leave barely any wiggle for entrepreneurial expenses let alone food, transportation, and entertainment.

Changes to these areas of interest would have a beneficial impact in Orlando’s ecosystem. Higher wages and more affordable housing will lead to more available income to spend and invest. Informing and including underserved communities in the develop of the economy will result in a lasting increase in economic development.
