The name Tallahassee is an Apalachee Native-American word that means “old town” or “abandoned fields”. This was an apt name for the area being that, in 1656, a Spanish deputy governor and his crew settled in the Apalachee town they originally called San Luis, which came to be west Tallahassee.

As of now, Tallahassee has remained a small town but has grown in a way land size is no longer fit to measure. I was born and raised in Tallahassee and to me, it hasn’t always been a hub of culture it has come to be, but it has always meant “family” to me. A strength of Tallahassee is how close-knit everyone is with each other, although everyone in Tallahassee may not act accordingly with the right attitude it’s hard not to make a connection with someone in even the most bizarre situations.

Lately, Tallahassee has been under construction and not just raising buildings but also building a brand. With the reputation of already being a college town, it's no surprise about the increase of new companies and employment opportunities that have started to accumulate.

As a local and a college student, I have noticed that securing a future outside of depending on aid or benefits is mostly based on who you know. In a small town like Tallahassee, your future depends on your reputation, how you present yourself and your potential. All three of these attributes can either make or break you. If everything pertaining to you is mostly positive and you show initiative there’s a high chance that someone is willing to help you out or do whatever is within their power to make mountains move. However, with the latter, you’re more likely to get the door slammed in your face or trapped in the revolving wheel of bureaucracy for weeks just to find out they said no to you a long time ago. However, for the most part, the strong suit of Tallahassee is how community focused everyone is to make a difference.
