In a piece in the New York Times yesterday, linguist John McWhorter made the case for simplifying English spelling. Citing numerous examples of quirky inconsistencies (think about “cough,” “tough,” “though,” and “bough,” for example), McWhorter urges us to adopt a more rational system.
