I was Miss Gardiner’s tutor in ancient history and classics at Madame N.D. Chagaray Institute for Young Ladies when she came there in 1835 from her home in the Hamptons. I was 23, just arrived in New York from Boston and ready for the sort of romance one reads in Trollope.
