This autumn, Fuelet Wallet presented the Cloud Backup feature — and this release has completely changed the process of creating an account for Fuelet users. Now, you have a choice: depending on your risk tolerance, you can save the seed phrase in a traditional way (by writing it down/ copying it) or go for a more easy and fast option and back up your account with iCloud or Google Drive. This process might be unfamiliar not only for the crypto newbies but to the degens who have yet to use this feature. That’s what this article might help with!

We’ll briefly explain the concept of Cloud Backup, and show how you can set it up a) when you’re just starting with Fuelet Wallet and b) when you already have the Fuelet Wallet account. Choose the abstract and steps that will be the most suitable in your case!

What’s the Cloud Backup?

Cloud Backup is basically a method of your seed phrase storage which is sometimes referred to as a centralized approach. When you click on the button to back up your seed phrase, it is immediately sent and saved in the iCloud for iOS or an equivalent mechanism for Android, such as Google Drive within the Fuelet wallet app. If you use Cloud Backup, you don’t need to write down your seed phrase manually, copy it, or make a screenshot of it! The process of creating a wallet becomes much faster and easier.

Also, the feature eliminates risks associated with storing the seed phrase offline/online: while you’re writing it down, somebody can take a photo of it, and a malicious app can copy it from your clipboard… Later on, you may get your seed phrase stolen, or can just lose the piece of paper where you saved it — but with the Backup feature, you can forget about those dangers.

Note that the feature is available only for mobile apps: both iPhones and Android.

Despite the fact that we find Cloud Backup to be a great alternative for an offline/online seed phrase, it’s important to be aware of the following safety risks it brings up:

  1. Apple or Google could potentially compromise or leak your keys.
  2. If someone gains access to your Apple ID/Google Account, and your device, they can control your wallet. Turn on the 2FA on your Apple/Google accounts!
  3. If the app is removed from the App Store or Google Play, and you delete the app from your device without saving the seed phrase elsewhere, it could result in irreversible loss.

However, let’s be honest: it’s easier for you to lose your seed phrase than for Google or Apple to steal your keys. Therefore, we still recommend using the Backup feature, especially for Web3 newbies.

It is also essential to note that this represents only the first level of seedless security in Fuelet. Further options like the Hardware Signer and Social Recovery will provide even stronger safeguards for your wallet. You can read more about them in this Fuelet Medium article.
