Over the past weekend, FUERGY attended the 2018 Global Power & Energy Blockchain Conference, the world’s first event focused on the use of Blockchain technology in the Power & Energy Industry. Along with our CEO Radoslav Štompf and CCO Tomáš Demčák, I represented our company in our first stateside visit as we looked to get a feel for current trends in energy, IT and blockchain.

We’ve noticed a much more sober attitude towards blockchain; it is no longer the holy grail of technologies, but rather perceived as a real technology with its advantages and limitations that can already be utilized in practical ways. There was a huge amount of companies, ranging in size from large to the smallest, each presenting their own blockchain-based solution. We noticed a distinctive lack of knowledge when it comes to challenges of utilizing blockchain in energy. At the same time, there is limited interest in actually learning the detailed principles of blockchain. For most, it is sufficient to understand how it will assist their business, no time to actually go into the nuances, the technology is supposed to be invisible, simple to use and “bulletproof”, so-to-say.

The energy community does not have concerns over the issues blockchain presents to the mainstream. Those are, for instance, how people can buy tokens to use in their systems, how to use exchanges and so on. The energy community still thinks of blockchain implementation as a task for crypto enthusiasts, who, they think, will do their best to make the tech transparent, simple and even better than internet banking.

The trip was definitely worth it, although the topic of energy took center stage to the discussion over blockchain implementation. The networking was excellent, and it became clear that this conference would be much more about making connections rather than learning new developments. It is becoming clear that conferences are no longer primarily about sharing new information but rather about making connections. The atmosphere was very open and everyone was willing to network and exchange contact information.
