Looking for ways to give back to the community during the holidays? Here are five picks to get you started. Give the gift that matters–social impact!

1. Give a Family Christmas

When you “adopt” a family, you help remove financial hurdles for families in need by donating Christmas presents they otherwise wouldn’t have. The Volunteers of America Adopt-A-Family program benefits families in our Columbus housing programs — those who are homeless or at risk of being homeless and struggling to make ends meet. Volunteer to help wrap presents now through December 25!

2. Give a Bag to Foster Children

Children entering foster care are often only given two black trash bags to move their things. Together We Rise knows foster kids deserve more. Get your family, friends or coworkers together and decorate duffle bags! They ship fully stocked bags to you for decorating, and connect you with a local foster agency you can personally deliver them to. Order your bag by Friday, December 16.

3. Grant a Wish

Holiday Wish allows youth under the care of Franklin County Children Services to request a special toy or gift. Each year, the central Ohio community provides gifts for more than 5,500 children who may have experienced abuse, neglect or other difficult home conditions. In some cases, these are the only gifts that these children will receive all year. Help make the holidays special and grant a wish.

4. Feed the Hungry

Holy Family Church operates a soup kitchen and food pantry serving more than 350 people daily, Monday through Friday, and provides weekly groceries to over 125 families. If you are interested in volunteering this holiday season, contact Sharon Wing (after 1 pm) at 614-221-4323. Food and personal hygiene items will also kindly be accepted as donations!

5. Help Re-stabilize Domestic Abuse Victims

For almost 40 years, CHOICES for Victims of Domestic Violence has been providing a safe, secure shelter for victims of domestic violence in Franklin County. Volunteer to work in the CHOICES shelter for victims of domestic violence, or help prevent further violence by volunteering as a community speaker for the organization.
