Exponential Impact is Our End-Game

In a previous role, I had a customer complain about the cost of a particular tool. I responded by pointing out that his organization’s counterpart in a third-world country used a donkey to solve the same problem that this tool was intended to address in the U.S. Literally, a donkey, and with celebrated success. He was mentally oppressed by financial constraints, and they were overpowering his ability to innovate.

As professionals, being backed into a corner can unearth new possibilities. As you step outside of your corner, what you are leaving behind is precisely the place you know innovation does not exist. And that opens up entirely new dimensions in thinking. The corner that once confined you is rendered irrelevant.

As creatives, we pour our energies into what others might consider the abyss. Inspiration comes through research and understanding, but we’re also fiercely fearless when it comes to trial and error, instinct — even serendipity. The potential that certain concepts embody is why we do what we do, even if it has to do with assigning new uses to resources, such as donkeys. As professionals, Fulcrum Creatives applies this creativity to the work of nonprofits, B Corps and social enterprises. Positive impact is the factor that matters most to us.

If you find you are uncomfortable outside your corner, that’s ok. You’re not alone. But you can choose to surround yourself with creative business partners who are comfortable working in this undefined space. These partners can provide external perspectives and challenge your thinking to help you persevere. Don’t let your corner cripple the potential impact that you (personally or your organization) have the opportunity and ability to achieve.

The next time you’re faced with a seemingly impossible situation, contact us and we’ll be happy to apply our creative problem-solving superpowers to work with you.

Sara Parker is a creative partner of Fulcrum. When she’s not at work, she’s tending to her plants as a master gardener or helping solve community problems by assisting social enterprises.
