Cornell’s offense looked anemic. Passes were falling incomplete, and Colgate’s defense was smothering the run. The Raiders were up 14–0 and were threatening to bury Cornell early in the second quarter.

And then, in an instant, the Red was right back in the game.

Junior quarterback Robert Somborn handed the ball of to senior running back Luke Hagy. Hagy grabbed the ball and ran towards the line of scrimmage. It was like any other play, until it wasn’t. Hagy juked past a Colgate defender and found a hole in the line of scrimmage. He blew past two other Raiders who collided into each as they dove for Hagy. But Hagy was already gone.

“The play it supposed to hit a little tighter, they were all outside,” Hagy said. “Then I bounced it out and through my head, I’m thinking ‘don’t get caught, don’t get caught.”

He sprinted down the field 25 yards untouched before Colgate’s Joe Figueroa tried to force Hagy out of bounds. It was a bad decision on Figueroa’s part. Hagy casually stiff-armed the defensive back and kept on going.

“It came down to there was one guy there,” Hagy said. “It was just instinct for me from drills we’ve done in practice when we practice the stiff arm. It helped that I had sticky gloves and I had a full grip on his head and just kind of tossed him away.”

Hagy tiptoed the sideline and, thanks to junior wide receiver Collins Shaw’s block at the 10-yard line, was able to easily jog into the end zone.

“Collin did a great job,” Hagy said. “I probably don’t score if Collin wasn’t 65 yards down the field blocking for me.”

One of the Raider’s focuses going into the game was containing Hagy according to Colgate head coach Dan Hunt.

“We knew about Luke,” Hunt said. “Our goal all week was to not let him get outside and he got outside for one and took it 80 yards.”

“It’s how we drew it up,” head coach David Archer said with a laugh.
