How to Fix College Football

As college football seasons come and go, one thing remains the same and that is that Clemson, Alabama, and Ohio State are always at the top. With this, some people are not as energetic for this season because they get tired of seeing these teams at the top of the college football world. Today I am going to give you my ideas on how to get college football back to how people want it.

Recruiting Repetition

The first problem I am going to address is how recruiting favors the big schools. All of the top recruits want to go to big schools like Ohio State and Alabama because they get the most attention and also because these schools dominate everybody else. In last season’s NCAA basketball season, you saw the top recruit Cade Cunningham going to Oklahoma State and it not affecting his draft stock. In my opinion, some recruits do not go to these other schools because they will not receive the same attention that recruits that go to Alabama and Clemson. Most of this is on the NCAA because they fail to give screen time to other schools and it leads to players not wanting to go somewhere smaller when they are not going to receive much attention. Also in the college football playoffs, people get tired of seeing the same teams every year. This leads to the next point of the NCAA expanding the playoffs.

Playoff Expansion.

Something that fans have wanted for a long time is an expansion for the college football playoffs. The twelve-team playoff is what looks as if it will be selected in the near future by the NCAA. Even though that is the case it is not the best format possible. The one I would want is a six-team or eight-team playoff. With a six-team format, it would eliminate the trouble of the committee. The way this would work would be that they take the winner of each power five conference champion and then the best team remaining outside of the power five. This gives teams like UCF and Coastal Carolina a chance to make it to the playoffs. Also, it eliminates the Pac-12 from being snubbed in the selection show. This format also makes the conference championship games more of a purpose. This system would also take out the committee from playing a difference in the selection of the teams.

Committee Catastrophe

This in my eyes is the biggest problem in college football and what makes for an interesting case on how they judge the teams. If the NCAA goes to a twelve-team playoff or if they keep it at four one thing needs to change and that is the way the committee picks the team. The way I think the NCAA and the committee should select the teams is in the following list. The rankings are from the top being the starting point and the bottom being the least impactful.

  1. Wins and Loses.
  2. Net Rating which would be put in place.
  3. Head to Head games if played.
  4. Point Differential.
  5. Strength of Schedule.

I think this would be a good way for the NCAA to make the committee use these criteria in place to figure out who makes the college football playoffs. With this, it would give other schools chances to make the playoffs and also allow more people to become interested in college football because of how everybody is on an equal playing field.
