Winners & Losers from the Hungarian Grand Prix

Rain before the start created a thriller of a race. Some teams enter the summer break on high hopes, while others are looking to bounce back and strike harder. We look at the winners and losers from this weekend’s Grand Prix in Hungaroring.

Winner: Esteban Ocon

Esteban Ocon had an amazing weekend, claiming his maiden victory in Formula One. After the turn one collision, Ocon was second on the grid behind Lewis Hamilton.

In his first season with Alpine, Ocon has scored 39 points in eleven races. This season he has only retired twice, once in Azerbaijan due to a mechanical issue, the second time he retired because of a crash involving Antonio Giovinazzi and Mick Schumacher.

Loser: Max Verstappen

For the second race in a row, Verstappen was involved with a crash involving a Mercedes. In a disappointing race, Max finished ninth receiving only two points.

Verstappen has also lost the lead to Lewis Hamilton in the Drivers Championship. He is currently sitting six points behind the defending champ.

Winner: Williams

Williams scored their first constructions points after a long two-year drought. The last time Williams scored points in a Grand Prix was back in 2019 at Hockenheim. The last double points scored were at Monza in 2018.

During the press conference, George Russell expressed his emotion after scoring his first points for Williams. He has been driving for the team since 2019.

Loser: Red Bull

The last two races for Red Bull have been tough. Unfortunately, they have only managed to score a total of two points. This has caused Mercedes to take the lead in the Constructors Championship in 56 point swing since Austria.

Red Bull has conveyed their frustration towards Mercedes, as a Merc has crashed out the Bull’s cars in the last two races.

Winner & Loser: Sebastian Vettel

A big winner Vettel accomplished a podium finish for the second time this season. In his first season with Aston Martin, Vettel has had an up and down season. He has scored in only three races.

Vettel may have been a winner, but he is also a loser. He was disqualified from the Hungarian Grand Prix after officials were unable to receive the required amount of sample fuel. Regulations state that 1.0 liters of sample fuel may be taken from the vehicle at any time during the event. Unfortunately, it was only possible to sample 0.3 liters of fuel resulting in disqualification.

Winner: Carlos Sainz

Carlos Sainz made the comeback of the day. Starting a P15, Carlos made his way through the field, finishing fourth to then be promoted to third. This is his second podium of the season with Ferrari and the second time he has not been able to stand on it.

Sainz managed to avoid the turn one collisions and had a strong pace in free air after Nicholas Latifi went into the pits. He moves up into sixth place of the Driver Standings ahead of his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc.
