Avoiding Social Media

In photographer Dave Morrow’s blog, he encourages budding photographers to avoid chasing likes, followers, and subscribers. In 2018 he deleted all of his social media accounts with 1.5 million followers to forge a more sustainable way to build a photography business. [1]

I took his advice, and for the last six years I have dedicated my pursuit of wilderness photography solely to the improvement of my craft. I was serious about Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000 hour rule that he first proposed in Outliers: The Story of Success [2]. In this age, when everyone is a photographer, why would anyone want to pay me for anything less than world-class images?

Without the distraction of social media or trying to market myself, I spent all of my photography time getting better. I’ve honed my backpacking skills so that I can safely camp and shoot at 12,000 in the wintertime. I’ve learned to compose and edit shots that blend the inner landscape of my emotions with the wilderness. I’ve been a student in Dave Morrow’s Landscape Photography School since 2019, and have…
