The Engine Cowl of a Diesel Locomotive Engine (Photo by Author)

One of the things I occasionally try to do in my free time is volunteer with a non-profit that runs and upkeeps antique diesel train engines and even older passenger and freight cars. They call themselves a “rolling museum.” But perhaps it’s secretly just an excuse to take pictures of trains. Hmm…surely not.

Prompt — Letter Late Than Never

This letter is nearly never late, because the trains (mostly) run on time here! This “F” is featured near the front of the engine, for crewmen to facilitate forward function. But the real reason is that, short of having a turntable or wheelhouse, trains do not turn around when returning from point B to point A. Crew send signals to the engineer when adding or removing cars, since the field of view from the cabin is limited. The “F” ensures that everyone is on the same page as to which direction the engine needs to move at any given time.

Headlamp and Engine Number (Photo by Author)

This prompt is a bonus double-feature — or I cheated. At any rate, I was drawn to the vaguely Hal-like look of the headlamp on the front of this engine.

Prompt — I Call It Art

Being surrounded by these big, powerful machines from days gone by is an experience that probably can’t be captured in a photograph. But I tried, anyway. And these machines are pieces of art, many with hand-made parts and custom-fabricated pieces held together by the loving labor of childhood dreams made real.

Closed Engine Vents (Photo by Author)

Prompt — Blank Space

The lines and variegated shades of these vent louvers create a pattern that I find engaging.

Prompt — Tangled Up in Blue

The Blue Hour of dusk seemed appropriate for this portrait of my feelings about this particular snowstorm.
