Week 10 — Read Between The Lines

I was out looking for wildflowers in the Sonoran Desert and came across a group of horses grazing on one of the few grassy areas. I liked how the horse looked up to see what I was doing, then went back to dinner.

Week 11 — Out of Place

One of the best parts of Spring in the Sonoran Desert is when the wildflowers start to appear. Last year we had an amazing wildflower superbloom. This year is nowhere as grand as the last, but still a wonderful sight to see in the middle of the desert.

Week 12 — The Mystery Zone

In the Eastern Catholic Church, the Sacraments are called the Holy Mysteries. An interesting difference between East and West is that we provide all of the Mysteries of Initiation (Baptism/Chrismation/Eucharist) to babies at the time of their Baptism. I had the honor of photographing this for friends of ours as their first-born was brought into the Byzantine Ruthenian Catholic Church.

Week 13 — A Movie Title

According to the website imdb.com, the movie The Nun II was based in part on St. Lucy. St. Lucy was a martyr from the 4th century who came from wealthy Sicilian parents. She decided that she would spurn marriage and wordly goods, and remain a virgin. An angry suitor reported her to the Romans and she was sentenced to be removed to a brothel and forced into prostitution. Her body became immovable and could not be carried away. She was next condemned to death by first, but proved impervious to the flames. She was eventually killed by the sword. Legend has it that she gouged her own eyes out to stop men from pursuing her. After her death, her eyes were miraculously healed. This is why she is shown with a plate containing her eyes.
