When the heat arrives in May, so do the cactus flowers (photo by author)

18 — Roots — Human, or not.

Dying Saguaro Cactus(photo by author)

Last year was a brutal year for heat in the Sonoran Desert. I have lived here for 20 years and have not seen as many cacti falling over due to heat stress. As I was walking the other day I came across this one, with nothing but the roots of the cactus showing.

19 — Back in Time — Interpret that as you will

If I could do something, I would like to go back in time to certain events in our country's history. I would like to go back to December 6, 1941 and be able to convince the military that there was a large attack coming. I would like to go back to November 22, 1963 and alert the Secret Service that a man was going to assassinate the President of the United States. I would like to go back to September 10, 2001 and alert the intelligence agencies that a massive hijacking attack was going to take place. Perhaps go back to the 1960’s and see if J. Edgar Hoover really wore dresses! (side note: One of my supervisors, when he graduated from new agent training and the class went to FBIHQ, took a turn sitting in the Director’s chair, looked under the desk and said, “So that’s where they keep the dresses.” Little did he know that then Director Louis Freeh had walked into the office and heard it all.)

But really, more than anything, I would like to go back to a time and place where the majority of our country was kind and united, not evil and divided.

20 — Is There Anybody Out There?- Like Pink Floyd, or not.

Beautiful Sunset Over Pacific Ocean (photo by author)

One of my favorite things to do is sit on a cruise ship balcony and watch the sea roll by. In this photo we were cruising the Pacific Ocean, somewhere between Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan. As I looked at this picture the thought came to mind…Is there anybody out there? What if I fell off this balcony? Would some other ship come along to rescue me?

21 — Old School — Interpret that as you will

Dilapidated Wagon (by author)

There is an area close to my house called Old Town Cave Creek. They have a place called Frontier Town where they have storefronts, wagons, wheels, and all things from the 1800s. We had stopped for ice cream, walked over to Frontier Town, and found this old-school method of transportation.

22 — Pretty in Pink — Like the movie, or not.

The Lovely Jennifer Cullen (photo by author)

We had booked a trip to Cancun for just the two of us. We found a great adults-only hotel that was part of a larger complex owned by Iberostar. As we were waiting to go to dinner, I captured this beauty. She had on a pink dress, pink arms, pink face and pink buns from too much sun…oops. As the title goes, she was Pretty in Pink.
