Speaking of this country and half a world away…a rare child free moment for us. Photo by author.

April is a month of many memories for me. April was the month I was first married in, and April was the month I was first widowed in. April was the month that my current wife and I first traveled outside the USA.

Week 14 — This Country

Secluded beach in Playa Del Carmen. Photo by author.

After a long period of time of caring for my dying wife, and watching her die on April 18th, this trip to Mexico was good for my soul. My current wife Jennifer and I packed some bags and headed South to Mexico for 4 days of no children, no work and no worries.

Week 15 — Beheaded

St. Denis, beheaded in Paris. Photo by author.

After we married, we travelled to Paris for a wonderful honeymoon. My wife, a Catholic school religion teacher, wanted to see all the churches of France…especially Notre Dame. To her surprise I found a hotel that was less than a 1/4 mile from Notre Dame and we visited frequently. On the outside of the church, over one of the entrances, was this statue of St. Denis of Paris. After he was beheaded, he walked 6 miles carrying his head from Montmartre to the location where his basilica church is located.

Week 16 — Pretty isn’t Pretty

Prom Night 2024 — Rare photo of oldest daughter smiling with her Mom. Photo by author.

My take on this week comes from the line of a country song. Life ain’t always beautiful, tears will fall some times. Life ain’t always beautiful, but it’s a beautiful ride. When we married we blended two families together. For my part I brought a 10yo boy, a 70 something mother and a beagle. For Jennie’s part she brought three girls, 9, 7 and 5. Consistent with the lyrics, our life together has sometimes been difficult, sometimes tears have fallen, but it is a beautiful ride.

Week 17 — Half a Word Away

The Basilica church at Lourdes, France. Photo by author.

Half a word away sits a church that was built on a garbage dump. Half a word away is a grotto where some 5–6 million people visit annually. Half a word away is a source of water in which 70 people experienced unexplained cures after bathing in the water. Half a word away sit Lourdes, France, a place we visited that seems like half a lifetime ago.
