A Simple Way to Improve Your Photography Skills

My guitar teacher once taught me a simple but powerful lesson:

  • If you want to improve your melody, learn from violinists or flutists.
  • If you want to improve your groove, learn from bass players.
  • If you want to improve your timing, learn from drummers.
  • If you want to improve your stage presence, learn from public speakers.

The idea is that learning from experts in other fields related to what you do can help you view your work from a fresh perspective and improve your skills.

As a photographer, I’ve applied this lesson in my own way:

  • To improve my food photography, I learn from chefs or food stylists.
  • To improve my wedding photography, I learn from documentary filmmakers.
  • To improve my real estate photography, I learn from property agents or architects.
  • To improve my sports photography, I learn from athletes.

This approach helps me think differently about my work.
