This year I thought it might be fun to consider the monthly challenges as assignments to be accomplished under a deadline. Like the assignments, I used to get from the editor of my college weekly newspaper.

He would announce his vision for the week and list the articles to be published, sending me out to capture images needed. Taking that approach, my goal for this year is to use photographs taken during the month only resorting to an earlier photo from the archives when the prompt begs for it.

This month four of the photographs are of local infrastructure here in Northen Poland. The fifth is a shot from the past and related to current events. All of them are late afternoon and evening shots, a time when light is gentle on the subject.

Keeping Time

There is an interesting mix of buildings in Slupsk, Poland. Once a part of Germany, many of the buildings have that late 19th-century feel with architectural detail common throughout Europe.

For the rest of the structures, think classic Soviet Union. Bland, square concrete buildings with the character of a concrete block.

Yet occasionally there is something unique to be found with these mid-20th century monoliths. Buried in the cluster of uninspiring…
