Bratislava Month of Photography 2024 Review

Every year, Bratislava hosts a Month of Photography festival, organized by the Central European House of Photography. For me, this was the first year after the Covid-19 crisis that I dared to visit the opening week with all the exhibition openings and accompanying events. I also partnered with Infocona, which let me use a Fujifilm XT-5 for the trip (all of the images below were taken with it). I’ll review the camera in a separate article; for now, let’s delve into the festival and its program.

I am not exactly new to this festival. The first time I visited was in 2011 when I was a photography student, and the festival was at its peak. At the time, I was really impressed to see world-class photographers presented with in-depth exhibitions, large prints, and many books.

After that, the festival entered a crisis period (around 2015) but got back on its feet in the past few years (ironically, during Covid times). However, this year I think the organizers fell a bit short again. It wasn’t bad at all, but not at the same level as before.

And I am not blaming them; organizing such an event is a tremendous feat that requires a lot of time, money, effort, and passion. Sometimes these things just don’t align, despite the best efforts. But in…
