After my first winter in the Blue Ridge Mountains, I was more than ready for spring. May is my favorite month, which probably makes it go faster than the shorter February.

Roots

As a rambunctious pre-teen, I was somewhat tamed and shaped by my time in the Girl Scouts. One of my favorite activities was our outings to Birch State Park in nearby Ft. Lauderdale, FL. I’m sure we participated in lots of significant undertakings. The only one I remember — time spent in this glorious Banyan tree. I was surprised when I stopped by a few years ago and found it was not only still there, but the ROOTS! have multiplied beyond description.

Twilight Zone

My visit to Cuba right after the 2016 election was perfectly timed. The Twilight Zone was about to unfold. Our last night of our tour on this fascinating island found us headed to a private club. I’m not much of a clubber. By Cuban standards, it was a few steps up from our typical unpretentious eateries. Walking into this establishment was twilight-y as we had spent our entire visit immersed in the poverty caused by, among other things, the US trade boycott.

Is Anybody Out There?

Fergie, the pilot of “It’s a Touchy Subject,” loved getting dolled up for his flights. I’ve flown and crewed with him several times out in New Mexico. I could almost hear him shouting “Is anybody out there?” as we wafted over the Rio Grande one morning. Fergie went to the Great Beyond last year, so he’s probably answering this question — yes he is out there!

Old School

In the beautiful part of Kansas, the Flint Hills, you’ll see lots of very old buildings, like this school. My friend from Tanzania, Sister Fausta Mtweve, was fascinated by this one-room school house. I happened to catch this unedited, unposed reflection as she rounded the corner. She was soon to be heading back to TZ after finishing her master’s degree in education and administration. Capturing her image in this surreal school shot was pure luck.

Pretty in Pink

I don’t like pink, so I had to look hard for a pink shot. This guy jumped out at me, with his pink pussy hat at a protest march in Raleigh, NC. The timelessness of this image, from February 2017, leaves me a tad discouraged, and hoping that our great nation will turn the corner on this era of absurdity.
