Roots — Human or Not

Like many words in the English language, the word roots has many meanings. Since I am a plant person, I immediately thought of this photo of the roots of prairie plants on display at the U.S. Botanical Gardens in Washington, D.C.

Prairie plants have long roots to help them survive. The roots anchor the plant in the soil to remain stable in high winds. In addition, deep roots can reach water in times of drought, which is common in the Great Plains of the United States.

The roots often are many times longer than the height of the plant above ground. Some of the examples above are grasses like Big Bluestem and Little Bluestem. Corn also has a long tap root.
