New Photographers: Seek Out These 3 Things Immediately

Yes, this is another photography “listicle” — an article with a list of things to do or buy.

But if you’re new to photography, I’m hoping that you’ll find this useful because I do think that there are three things that you absolutely need, at a minimum, to move ahead in this hobby.

Let me say right up front: I’m not including a camera on this list, just because that’s obvious.

I will say, though, that although smartphones certainly include excellent cameras these days, I would suggest moving to a “real” camera as soon as you can. By “real” camera, I simply mean a device that’s dedicated to taking photos (and maybe video) and that has a decent-sized sensor — one larger than the tiny sensors that phones have.

That’s just my opinion. A larger sensor gives you better low-light performance and overall image quality. A dedicated camera is also much easier to hold, and depending on what camera you get, it allows you more control and more lens and lighting options.

Anyway, given all of that, here are three other things that I think you need to look for as soon as you get started.
