Under my Christmas tree this year: Voigtlander Nokton 40mm 1.2. To be reviewed soon. :) Photo by author.

Every craftsman dreams of tools that would make their life easier. Some of these ideas have been in my mind for over a decade — some small, some big, and some that are actually nearing the horizon. Here’s what I’d like to see in the coming year.

Film Scanning Picture Styles

Lately, I’ve been scanning a lot of negatives with my digital camera. I’m quite tired of converting them with Photoshop actions or slow conversion software like Negative Lab Pro (which works wonderfully but takes time). Why can’t cameras have a picture style that converts negatives directly?

Fujifilm is the company I have in mind. They boast about their film emulations with every new camera release, so it would be logical for them to take their color science to the next level. They could offer scanning picture styles for their classic film stocks like Superia or FujiPress — or even slide films like Provia or Astia, which we loved so much.

Third parties could also create presets for scanning other popular brands (Kodak Portra, Agfa, etc.), allowing us to digitize our archives much faster.
