Here we are, walking amongst the dead (all photos by author)

The largest city in Yorkshire and its churches

Smart Shot is one of my favourite sections in The Guardian’s weekend supplement. Professional photographers let us in on their creative process when taking pictures on their phones. It has been the inspiration for many of the posts I’ve written, not only for Full Frame, but also for other pubs.

This section-within-a-section-within-a-section is slightly modelled on Smart Shot. Where it varies is that the subject has tended to be the same since the beginning: churches. As I’ve mentioned before, I will start including other places of worship at some point, but for the time being churches are the objects that make me pull my phone out in order to shoot.

A good example is the weekend just gone. My other half and I stayed in Leeds city centre, a place I was familiar with from previous trips. What I hadn’t clocked was that there were roughly half a dozen churches within walking distance of each other.

With a pause in the rain and grimness, we decided to go for a long walk southbound. The first church I spotted was a CoE (Church of England) near Briggate, one of Leeds commercial arteries.
