Tottenham Court Road (photo by author)

This time this section-within-a-section focuses on a phenomenon, rather than just showcasing different places.

According to recent reports rough sleeping in London has hit an all-time high. Approximately 1,100 people are living on the streets of the British capital. The main cause is evictions.

It’s a subject close to my heart because I recently started volunteering with a charity that cooks fresh, nutritious food every day, and then distributes it to those who want/need it. We often go to places where homeless people make up the bulk of the long queue.

Rough sleeping is not restricted to one particular area of London. The photo at the top of this post was taken in Tottenham Court Road, the beating heart of London’s vibrant West End. Opposite the tent is Heal’s, the upmarket retail shop that specialises in furniture, lighting, and home accessories. A few days ago we set up our food stall on the other side of the road and I counted eight tents outside Heal’s. The contrast couldn’t have been starker: immaculately dressed punters going to the theatre mingled with trolley-pushing homeless people struggling to hold the boxes of food we were giving them.
