The capital and its churches
For those of you who’re wondering when this section-within-a-section-within-a-section will feature a religious building south of the river, my answer is: “It will come”. Just not yet.
We start our tour in St Ethelburga (above). Technically speaking, St Ethelburga is no longer a church. It is now the Centre for Peace and Reconciliation. The reason for the change lies in the 1993 IRA bomb that destroyed almost the whole building. Only the pillars were left standing. The device had been planted outside the church although it was not the building that was the target but its surroundings. St Ethelburga is located in the City of London, the financial district of the capital.
Like the legendary Phoenix, St Ethelburga emerged from its ashes and has become one of those lesser-known and yet must-visit places in London. I’m a regular, especially at the concerts organised by Listen to the World, a project whose aim is to showcase artists who have made London their home. From Senegal to Moldova, I’ve been exposed to rhythms and voices I could only have fantasised about.
