By the River Thames.

49 — Hard to Explain - So I made a photo

“Well, obviously there’s an airport close by!” Yes, obviously — but words alone can’t convey the unexpectedness of an airport bus sign pointing into the foliage. Only a photograph conveys the startling juxtaposition.

I was hiking between Cavtat and Čilipi in Croatia and had passed very few settlements on the way. So it was hard to imagine who would choose to take this hiking path (or ‘footway’) on their way to the airport. Especially with a wheely suitcase!

50 — White Noise

Along the Thames Path.

It’s December 2022 and I’m spending a week near the River Thames. There’s a big freeze, with no snow but lots of frost. Encrusted barbed wire, frozen willow branches and icy cobweb filaments (top photo). White noise for the eyes!

It didn’t stop people from paddleboarding down the Thames…

I write travel narratives, fiction and non-fiction and in a parallel life I lecture in Applied Linguistics. I’d rather be on a train in Europe. Original photos.
