It’s time to get corporate PAC money out of politics

For years, unlimited money from corporate special interests has flowed through our political system. Citizens United undid much of Senator John McCain’s bipartisan work and opened the floodgates for special interests to influence politics in Washington and across the country. We all know the system is broken. Washington is supposed to work for us, not special interests or big corporations. Corporate PAC money in politics poisons our democracy.

In this race alone, corporate special interest groups have already spent tens of millions against us, and they certainly won’t stop there. All eyes are on this Senate race as one of the closest in the country, and because of that, it’s also become one of the most expensive.

The effects of corporate special interests go far beyond just this race — it’s affecting Arizonans every day. It’s no secret that prescription drug prices have been on the rise for years. And politicians who accept money from pharmaceutical company PACs continue to look the other way.

Ofelia, from Superior, told me how she has to make decisions between paying her monthly utility bills or buying medication for herself or her son. It just costs so much. That’s a decision no parent should ever have to make. I’ve spoken to far too many Arizonans with similar stories about the costs of their prescription medications. It’s time to do something about that. The first step is electing people who work for Arizonans, not special interests. The next step is passing campaign finance reform to reduce the influence of corporate interests, like Big Pharma, on our politics.

To do that, we need politicians who will make decisions that are best for Arizonans, not special interests or big corporations. That’s why I’m proud to be endorsed by End Citizens United. We need to recognize that the system is broken, increase transparency, and stop the unlimited, secret spending in our elections. Only then can we make sure our democracy works for people like you, not just for the wealthy.

“Mark Kelly knows that Washington’s rigged system is failing Arizona families.” — Tiffany Mueller, ECU President

When it comes to our representatives in Washington, there shouldn’t be any doubt that they’re there to represent us. That’s why I made a decision at the beginning of this race: not a single dime of corporate PAC money will fund our campaign. And it’s also why I pledged to release my official schedule to the public. I’m committed to transparency because I want Arizonans to know I’m working for them.

I believe that this Senate race is about people, not special interests, and I wanted to take the first step to ensure that the voices of Arizonans are heard loud and clear. When I say this is a people-powered campaign, I mean it.
