A Little Goes A Long Way

I don’t know about you, but I need momentum every single day. I can be having one of the most productive weeks of my life, until one little thing gets in the way:

  • Staying up too late
  • Drinking a little too much
  • Not planning out my next day
  • Talking too much with others

The list goes on and on. Any one of these things can completely derail any progress I was making. When this does happen, it takes me entirely way too long to get back on track.

Some people tell us to avoid these vices altogether. Well, if you’re like me (human), this may not always be possible. Things happen. Especially during the holidays.

Friends come in town, families have traditions, others are on winter vacation. This can be one of the most unproductive times of the year. Ideally, we would all have the discipline of Tibetan monks, but this isn’t always possible.

My solution to stay on track?

Accomplish something little every single day.

Whenever a slump happens, any progress is good progress. During this time, it may be helpful to take whatever goal you’ve set and divide it into a few more actionable steps or be a little more forgiving with your deadlines.

It is also helpful to anticipate these down periods and proactively put processes in place to deal with them.

Feeling unmotivated? Save easier, more short-term tasks for these moments to give you a momentum boost.

This can be easier when working for yourself, but these moments happen no matter who you are and where you work. The most important thing is to be self aware enough to know when they happen to you.
