The Unified Field Within You

Following up on my post last week on cultivating discernment, the second fundamental principle is the idea that there is a unified field. There is one thing out of which all things are born. Everything, in its essential nature, is that one thing. Einstein called it a unified field. Theologians call it God. It is also called the Transcendent and the Absolute. The ancient Rishis, as well as some modern physicists, call it Consciousness.

This Oneness from which all things spring is similar to how all sorts of ‘things’ emerge from your consciousness when you’re asleep and dreaming. This field of Consciousness is where all things come from. So now you have an intellectual understanding of this idea. As you evolve and move along the spiritual path, this understanding moves from an intellectual notion to an inner sense, and ultimately becomes a clear certainty and a direct and perceptible experience. This evolution takes place within you over time. Finding this clearly within yourself is what really matters. Coming to experience this knowledge of the Absolute that is already deep within you, uncovering it and taking the shroud off, is what spurs a person on in life. How can we come to know this knowledge firsthand?

Proper meditation is the number one tool to pulling back the shroud. I recommend the Surya Ram Meditation. In addition to meditation, deep thought and careful reflection are also of great importance. Everything has to make sense to you. Making sense is not just about the intellect. It includes all levels of your being: thoughts, feeling, emotions, common sense, wisdom, and so on. It is not a matter of convincing yourself. It is a matter of finding the truth of the Absolute within yourself, through your OWN convictions, your own reasoning, your own personal experience. Without that, you are merely parroting something you heard. You only own it when you become it, when you find it within you. That process of becoming is called evolution.

There are plenty of examples of interconnection and correlation in this world that can help you find the Absolute within. Think of the Fibonacci sequence, a precise mathematical pattern that underlies pineapples, pinecones, and plenty of other natural structures. Or think of fractals — the way complex patterns in nature are actually self-repeating sequences of smaller, simpler patterns. This phenomenon occurs in everything from a head of broccoli to the peaks and valleys of the Grand Canyon. All around us, disparate fields, from business to music to science, actually parallel each other. If you reflect on this, it becomes clear that the only possible explanation for this mirroring is that all things are in fact coming out of the same one thing. The spokes of the wheel are all spinning around the same axle, in other words.

But it is up to you to see this from within yourself more and more clearly. It is not a matter of accepting it, or clinging to your current level of understanding, but of exploring that notion until you understand it more clearly. Do not try to convince yourself. Try to find truth within yourself. These are two very different things.

Rather than just believing your senses, how do you know that what you see around you is real? How do you know that it isn’t all just an illusion, like in the movie The Matrix? Consciousness is what gives us proof that our lives are real. If you are just honest with your ongoing experience, the deepest secret of the universe is revealed to you. All is born out of one thing… Consciousness… your consciousness. There is only one Consciousness, or as it is said, you are one with God. The only difference is your angle of approach, your relationship with that one Consciousness. That is what makes you uniquely you. The exploration is yours, no one else’s. Exploration tills the soil that uncovers deeper and deeper understanding. Evolution is not so much about learning more facts, as it is about finding a deeper relationship with the facts you already know.

Remember, real knowledge of anything and everything is found within YOU. Find ways to explore the notion of Oneness for yourself. To own it, you must become it. And that is a process called evolution.
