It’s now the second half of 2018 and as the third quarter has just ended, it’s time to look at the startup funding statistics. The Global Funding Report Q3 2018 is here to bring you all the necessary insights. In the report, we will analyze the total startup funding, rounds, round-sizes, industries, funding stages, regions and more!

Below is a short overview of the most important findings.

Third quarter continues to show growth in funding

2018 started out on a positive note in Q1 and continued with rapid growth in startup funding through Q2. The third quarter of the year doesn’t show as much of an increase in funding as the quarter before with $42bn in funding but is still 30% higher than Q3 2017. So far, 2018 has seemed to be a good year for startup funding with consistent growth of funding compared to last year.

In total, the funding grew by $9,7bn compared to the same quarter the year before. 50% of the total funding in Q3 went to North American startups.

Consistency in growth through all regions

At the start of this year, Europe overperformed all regions in the first quarter when it came to regional funding. During the second quarter, Asia was showing a massive increase in funding, but the third quarter brings us a stability in growth. All of the three main regions show similar growth compared to the same quarter a year before.

Despite the smaller amount of funding, Europe’s funding increased by 35% from $4bn in Q3 2017 to $5,5bn in Q3 2018.

Funding in Asia still overperforming

In the second quarter of the year, Asia had a huge increase in funding, mostly due to the $14bn raised by Ant Financial. In the third quarter, the funding fell significantly but is still better than previous years’ third quarters. Asia is continuing the trend of overperforming previous years’ funding in 2018.

Although Asia is doing well inside the region, the share of global funding in Asia has dropped from reaching almost 50% in Q2 2018 to only 34% in the third quarter this year.

Compared to Q3 2017, the funding increased by $3,3bn, which is 24%, in Q3 2018 reaching a total of $14bn.
