For those not aware, Jaan Tallinn was one of the founding engineers of Skype and Kazaa. He is a co-founder of the Cambridge Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (cser.org), Future of Life Institute (futureoflife.org), and philanthropically supports other existential risk research organisations. Jaan is on the Board of Sponsors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (thebulletin.org), member of the High-Level Expert Group on AI at the European Commission, and has served on the Estonian President’s Academic Advisory Board. He is also an active angel investor, a partner at Ambient Sound Investments, and a former investor in and director of the AI company DeepMind (deepmind.com).
In this edition, singularitarian, hacker, investor, and physicist, Jaan Tallinn will briefly share his investing experience as well as the value he sees in Funderbeam.
I have invested in about 80 startups that are solving many of the worlds most pressing problems — from curing cancer, building safe AI, to making digital backups of our brains. Most, if not all of these startups, have pressing problems of their own. For one, raising investment takes too much time and effort. It is hard to motivate employees when everyone knows that IPOs are too cumbersome so their options will only buy an illiquid piece of paper to hold onto for many years to come.
