Funderbeam in collaboration with NATO and the Royal Academy of Engineering are excited to welcome you to the joint event to hear from a unique set of industry experts and startups from the innovation and defence space.

We are honoured to be presenting the keynote speaker, together with the fireside chat participants for the Raising for Funds in the Security and Defence sector event. The speakers are a combination of industry experts, academics and investors who will be giving you a holistic view of what is going on in the innovation and funding space of this industry. Please find below the bios for our speakers at the event.

Kaidi Ruusalepp

Funderbeam founder and CEO

Kaidi is Founder and CEO of Funderbeam, the global funding and trading platform of private companies. Platform has investors from 132 countries and is awarded as the Best European Fintech startup in 2017. Kaidi is a former CEO of Nasdaq Tallinn Stock Exchange and of the Central Securities Depository. Co-Founder of Estonian Service Industry Association. Ex Member of Startup Europe Advisory Board at European Commission. The first IT lawyer in Estonia, she co-author of the Estonian Digital Signatures Act of 2000 — landmark legislation that enables secure digital identities and, in turn, the country’s booming electronic economy.

Keynote Speaker

Lars Frølund

Lars is a Research Director & Visiting Fellow at the MIT Innovation Initiative and the Chairman to the Expert Group for the European Commission.

His research focuses on the success factors for university-industry partnerships, innovation ecosystems, and mission-driven research and innovation agencies such as DARPA and ARPA-E. He also sits on the board of the Danish Innovation Fund and was a Fulbright Scholar at MIT in 2016/17.

Rob Murray

Head of Innovation at NATO

Rob Murray is the Head of Innovation at NATO in Brussels. He’s responsible for getting the Alliance ‘technology ready’ to take on the challenges and opportunities of Emerging Disruptive Technologies, ranging from AI, to Hypersonic missiles to Quantum and everything in-between.

Rob holds three master's degrees including an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Prior to joining NATO, Rob was an officer in the British Army for 10 years serving all over the world.

Dr. Shabana Haque OBE

Head of Engineering Policy at Royal Academy of Engineering

Dr. Haque joined the Royal Academy of Engineering 2019 from the Government Office for Science, where she worked with the Government Chief Scientific Adviser and departments across the public sector to establish, drive and deliver an ambitious transformation programme for the Government Science and Engineering (GSE) Profession.

With significant experience working in counter terrorism, defence and security, Dr Haque has also worked in a variety of senior technical and policy roles at the Cabinet Office, Home Office, Ministry of Defence and the Centre for Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI). She currently heads up the Engineering Policy Team and oversees the work of the National Engineering Policy Centre (NEPC).

Daniel Carew

Principal at IQ Capital

Daniel joined IQ Capital in 2019 and has deep-tech venture capital experience from several funds. Originally an engineer, he completed a PhD in Chemistry, was previously in Management Consulting and then moved into Venture Capital. He enjoys early-stage technology investing in engineering breakthroughs to help change the world for the better.

Daniel’s main areas of interest are within Artificial Intelligence, Industrial Engineering (including space and electronics), FinTech and Material Sciences. He is responsible for sourcing new deals, deal execution and continuous tracking of the market and relevant trends in deep technology sectors, as well as advising portfolio companies.

He sits on several boards including Oxford Space Systems, Dataswift and NuQuantum.

Alan Scrase

Access to Mentoring and Finance Lead at the Defence And Security Accelerator (DASA)

Prior to joining DASA, Alan was part of the Business Incubation Centre Manager of SETsquared at the University of Southampton. He supported and guided members to secure over £7m of grant and equity funding over six years.

Alan previously has worked with senior Innovate UK and HEFCE staff and was responsible for conceiving and managing the award winning Innovation to Commercialisation of University Research (ICURe) programme. Alan has also run his own stereoscopic imaging business knowing first-hand the complexities of running your own business. He has been closely associated with a wide range of regional and economic development projects and programmes and will use this experience and knowledge to help DASA support its suppliers.

Following the Fireside Chat, we will be hearing from our pitching companies looking to raise in the Defense and Security Sector. The pitching companies will be announced one week prior to the event.
