Medusa of the Gorgons, Artemis Goddess of Hunt, and Antinous of Delphi

Medusa of the Gorgons

Medusas Background/ Family ties:

  • Medusa was the daughter of Phorcys and Ceto which were Gorgons.
  • Gorgons are a mythological creature who could turn others into stone when Gorgons enemies look them in the eyes.
  • Medusa was a part of the Gorgon sisters that lived in Graiai lived in the utmost place in the night.
  • Medusas Gorogon sisters were Sthenno, ans Euryale. Out of the three of them Medusa was Mortal while her other two sisters were immortal meaning they can never die while Medusa can die.

Medusas story:

  • Before Medusa was cursed she was a beautiful maiden, therefore she caught the eyes of Poseidon. This causes Poseidon to force himself on her in Athenas shrine.
  • After Athena discovered what had happened she sought vengeance by turning Medusas hair into Snakes. If anyone looked at Medusa they would turn into stone.
  • After Medusa was raped she became pregnant by Poseidon.

Medusas Later Life and Death:

  • In the myth of Perseus A hero is sent by Polydectes , the king of Seriphus to bring the head of Medusa. However this was a trap because Polydectes desired Perseus mother therefore he wanted Perseus to die.
  • Thinking that Perseus was going to turn into stone Polydectes sent him to got the head of Medusa however what Polydected didn’t know that Perseus would actually bring back the head of Medusa.
  • Medusa however was asleep when she was attacked and killed by Perseus, she was decapitated and her head was taken to Polydectes.

Medusas Significant Deeds:

  • Medusa was the only Gorogon who possessed Snake locks as hair because of Athena.
  • Medusa didn’t really do anything significant deeds however her death is well known.

Medusas Powers:

  • Medusa possessed snakes as hair and was able to turn people to stone upon looking at her.
  • Medusa also protected her unborn child while she was a monster before her death.

Artemis Goddess of Hunt:

Artemis’s Background/ Family ties:

Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and the Titaness Leo, she also had a twin brother named Apollo.

  • is one of the most respected Greek deities. Not only was she highly respected she was the Goddess of Hunt, wild animals, wilderness, childbirth and virginity.
  • Since Artemis was a Virgin many Gods and men were drawn to her, however she won the heart of Orion.
  • Many believe that Orion was either killed accidentally by Artemis or Gaia the primordial Goddess of earth.

Significant Deeds:

  • Artemis was the favorite Goddess among the rural populace.
  • She was also a virgin so many men pined over her.
  • Diana was the name that the Romans identified her as.

Powers/ Abilities:

  • Artemis was armed with a bow and arrow and she possess the power to inflict death or plagues. She can also heal.
  • She is also known as the protectress of little children, and baby animals.
  • When Artemis would hunt she would have perfect aim at the target which also made he well known and loved.

Antionious of Delphi:

Antionious’s Background/ Family ties:

  • Antinous was born in Bithynia (midwest Turkey) and was the son of Eupithes (Homer) in the Odyssey. Little is known of his family except where he was born and whom he was born to.
  • It is believed that Antinous was A favorite or lover to the Roman Emperor, Hadrian.
  • After his Death Antinous was worshiped in the Greek and Latin languages.

Antionus’s Story:

  • Antionus was known as extremely beautiful, known as a living Angel.
  • In the year 123 AD supposedly Hadrian first encountered Antinous and fell in love. From there Antionus was sent to Rome to be educated at the finest boys school .Their he learned Latin, Potery, and the arts. At the school he remained close to Hadrian.
  • Antionus was very stuck up and had little respect for the lower class and would attack the lower class if they did wrong. Therefore many people did not like him and after he betrayed Odysseu’s he paid the price.

Significant Deeds:

  • Antionus was know to be one of the most beautiful creatures known to men so therefore many male lover were drawn to him.
  • He was also an excellent hunter which also happened to be Hadrians favorite past time, therefore the two of them would hunt together.
  • Because of his sexuality, Antionus he declared his sexuality a Religion which made many Christians react in a negative way. Therefore the choices he made also impacts today. His Religion was called the Religion of Antionus.
  • Although Antinous was very beautiful he was also known as mean spirited and over- confident. While Odysseu’s was lost at sea Antinous defiles his home.
  • Antionus was also known to have no respect for the lower class citizens and assaulted a beggar who was actually Odysseu’s in disguise .
  • Because he treated Odysseu’s very badly he, Antinous is the first suitor to be killed. He was slain by an arrow in the throat by Odysseu’s.

Powers/Abilities

  • Antionus was not a God however he was the Favorite and lover of the Roman Emperor Hadrian which landed him a high status.
  • Other than being the lover of Hadrian, Antionus wasn’t really known for anything else.
