“What will it take for me to get in on the fun?” you ask.

We only have a few important ground rules, but we’re a publication of inclusion and diversity, not only in the crowd that we’ll want to draw but also in the types of humor stories we want to publish. As long as you’re cool with a few ground rules being laid out from the start, then this publication is probably going to be the place for you.

Rules

A story should be funny. I mean this one is a given but I feel like I need to say it just to make sure we’re all on the same page.

No hate language or other discrimination should be present in your piece. Things like racism, sexism, and homophobia just aren’t funny. I don’t think I really need to say this more than once but it’s also against Medium’s guidelines, so this one is a given.

We allow and encourage four-letter words. So humor writers, don’t worry about the editors here being your language police. We’re all adults (presumably). No need for stars over important letters. Just be as profane as you’d like.

Do a grammar and spelling check on your work or your editors will do it for you. If you want to misspell stuff in your piece on purpose, let us know beforehand. Also if you’re a humour (and not humor) writer, let us know to check for British or other international English spelling other than American beforehand as well so we don’t mistakenly change that.

Make sure to have a title and subtitle. Some publications aren’t as picky about both title and subtitle but these stories will maximize attention to your story. Also, make sure both are in the following formatting, title in title case and subtitle in sentence case. Kickers above the title as I have here are encouraged, but optional.

Make sure you have private notes turned on, your editors will only suggest stuff to make your work funnier but if you feel that we are straying too far from your original idea, you can shut it down and just say that it’s complete and we will publish it with no additional questions asked. We won’t be overly picky about changing the tone of your piece. We want YOUR voice to come out, not necessarily what we think will be funnier.

Comedic captions for photos are encouraged but also optional. Please make sure to either use your own photos or a copyright-free stock photo and include the required caption for it as well. This is not only a Medium requirement but a protection against copyright infringement claims in the end. You don’t need to defend yourself against using a copyrighted image on accident.

We allow politics and religion or other controversial topics as long as it’s funny and not too overly attacking. Make it funny, not ranty. Any subject can be made funny, as long as it’s not overly ranty. We will accept lighthearted ribs at these topics in the publication and reserve the right to refuse anything that’s too charged and not so funny. Remember, humor is the primary goal here and people don’t laugh when they feel attacked.

We only publish unpublished drafts. We want to provide and publish the best original content in this publication. We may consider funny stories that have been previously published elsewhere on the Internet but if we do, the story has to be clearly marked as to where and when it was originally published.

Lastly, we are all about celebrating human voices in humor (humour). We’re not interested in your AI-generated humor stories. I’m sure they have a place somewhere on the Internet but they are just not a fit for Funny, Inc.

Come on, now that you know what we’re all about, you know that you want to write and laugh with us…

We accept all levels of humor writers. Even if you feel like you’re not that funny, we will give you the resources, tools, and guidance to help you get better at that. If you’re already a seasoned humor writer, that’s great, too. You can come over just because you want to be over here with the cool kids.

Now that you’ve read the guidelines and still want to publish with us, feel free to comment below and leave your Medium tag. For example, it’s the @ and then followed by your username. Mine is @bluejayspanthersfanincali.

Your editors here are Kathy Minicozzi and the Sturg. We are happy to welcome you to our funhouse.
