#29DaysOfBlackLoveSongs: Day 17

Today’s Black Love Songs: The Roots feat. Erykah Badu — You Got Me
We’re now on Day 17 of the FuseBox Radio’s Black History Month 2016 #29DaysofBlackLoveSongs online audio celebration, where I select and share various tunes that I feel express all sorts of Black Love — self-love, platonic love, romantic love, love for community, etc. — from various music genres repping the Black Diaspora.
Today’s tune is “You Got Me” by The Roots feat. Erykah Badu.
The life of a traveling worker is hard regardless of your vocation, much less if you’re in a relationship that might be more on the long-distance side than not.
To maintain ties of love when you’re in the mix like that — romantic, friendship or otherwise — can at times be a bit of a trial, especially when you may not be around someone all of the time or able to communicate a lot.
However, to know that someone has your back emotionally and more when you all CAN connect live and in person (or via whatever other means exist to touch base) — that you got me and I got you, regardless of what life can throw at you (including potential foolery) — is literally priceless.
The Roots make this sort of mentality crystal clear with this stellar track from their “When Things Fall Apart” album, with Black Thought and Eve perfectly expressing with their lyrics that while folks can get naturally nervous about what life may throw at them, ultimately they’re a true unit.
Also, Erykah Badu’s singing on the hook is sublime (“If you were worried ‘bout where/I been or who I saw or/What club I went to with my homies/Baby don’t worry you know that you got me”) along with the mid-tempo Hip-Hop head nod vibe for most of the tune to the almost hectic Drum and Bass transition around the end of the song and these particular Black Thought bars:
“I deal with the real so if it’s artificial let it be/
I’ve seen people caught in love like whirlwinds/
Listening to they squads and listening to girlfriends/
That’s exactly the point where they whole world ends/
Lies come in, that’s where that drama begins, she like”
Hope that folks enjoy this music selection and the others that will be on deck through the month of February under this hashtag, explore more tunes from these artists we put out there, share the music and more!
