Today’s Black Love Songs: LL Cool J — I Need Love

We’re now on Day 20 of the FuseBox Radio’s Black History Month 2016 ‪#‎29DaysofBlackLoveSongs‬ online audio celebration, where I select and share various tunes that I feel express all sorts of Black Love — self-love, platonic love, romantic love, love for community, etc. — from various music genres repping the Black Diaspora.

Today’s song of choice is “I Need Love” by LL Cool J.

You literally would not have a Drake or some of these other “emo” rappers without this song as a blueprint to be the vulnerable Hip-Hop MC that needs someone in their life to love that loves them back.

While for some younger heads, this song my come off crazy corny and sappy (which…yeah a bit), it still holds up as a great romantic “yup, I want to settle down with someone great beyond the surface and am ready to give a real relationship a go, screw everybody else” rap joint with some still quotable as hell young LL Cool J bars (you can’t tell me everyone doesn’t know at least the 1st 2 lines of this song).

And well….folks can get sappy, corny and sweet with romantic love. It’s how things can roll.
