#29DaysOfBlackLoveSongs: Day 5

Today’s Black Love Song: Earth, Wind & Fire — Shining Star
We’re now on day 5 of the FuseBox Radio’s Black History Month 2016#29DaysofBlackLoveSongs online audio celebration, where I select and share various tunes that I feel express all sorts of Black Love — self-love, platonic love, romantic love, love for community, etc. — from various music genres repping the Black Diaspora.
Today’s track is “Shining Star” by Earth, Wind & Fire.
This is probably one of the best self-love songs that was ever written, must less crafted with such care on the lyrical and production ends (those Soul and Funk grooves and harmonies making it jump off in 2 1/2 minutes!).
Just from the lyrics alone:
When you wish upon a star/
Your dreams will take you very far/
But when you wish upon a dream/
Life ain’t always what it seems/
What’d you see on a night so clear/
In the sky so very dear
You’re a shining star/
No matter who you are/
Shining bright to see/
What you could truly be (what you could truly be)
Shining star come in to view/
Shine its watchful light on you/
Give you strength to carry on/
Make your body big and strong
Born a man child of the sun/
Saw my work had just begun/
Found I had to stand alone/
Bless it now I’ve got my own/
So, if you find yourself in need/
Why don’t you listen to these words of heed/
Be a giant grain of sand/
Words of wisdom, yes I can
You’re a shining star/
No matter who you are/
Shining bright to see/
What you could truly be
The song lets you know while times have the inevitability of being rough at times with folks not believing in you, life throwing all sorts of emotional curveballs at you, etc., that you’re truly here for a reason.
You should never not love yourself enough to grow, consistently be a decent individual to yourself and others, take care of oneself (mentally and physically), pursue dreams & goals and be in the best situations you can be in on your own and with others one cares for and respect.
You don’t have to be “ordinary” for other peoples’ comfort when you may not be comfortable in the current societal constraints. Folks don’t have to be the “good” Black woman or man by mainstream standards (especially in terms of subservience with “staying in one’s station”). We’re all shining stars that should shine as bright was possible until our trajectories are meant to end.
Hope that folks enjoy this song and the others that will be on deck through the month of February under this hashtag, explore more tunes from these artists we put out there, share the music and more!
